Happy National Nutrition Month!

It’s a fun month-long celebration that you may not have heard about: Nutrition Month! In honor of this month, we will cover the importance of nutrition and how to keep the overall health of your body strong.

What Does Nutrition Look Like?

What you fuel your body with is converted to energy and your overall sense of well-being. Yet, many don’t realize what proper nutrition looks like and if they do, they find it difficult to follow. These tenets are a great starting point.

Proper Food

There are so many diet fads out there, but many never stick to a restrictive diet. A good rule of thumb is to adhere to the food pyramid. Your plate should be colorful all times of the year, not only in the summer. For starters, stick to one plate. Half of that plate should be filled with fruits and veggies. Often, if fruits or veggies are included, it only comprises a small portion of the plate. Try exposing yourself to a variety of colorful fruits and veggies at every meal.

One-quarter of your plate should be filled with whole grains. Another quarter of your plate should be filled with lean protein like chicken breast or ground turkey. Another great way to cut down on calories and keep your body moving as it should is to start each meal with a large glass of cool water. Staying within these parameters doesn’t have to be hard, and will be so much more filling than a meal without nutrients. Don’t forget that a sweet treat every now and then can help keep you from binging on too many junk foods. It’s all about balance.

Physical Exercise

Physical exercise combined with a healthy diet will help you  feel great. Twenty to thirty minutes of exercise five days a week will actually make you want to eat healthier. You’ll be hungrier, but you’ll notice how much easier it is to work out when you are fueled properly!

How Can PT Help?

Did you realize that physical therapists don’t only care about your physical movements, but also the diet you adhere to? It can have a significant impact on your recovery. For example, if you are not getting enough healthy fats in your diet, it could impact your joint pain, thereby impacting your ability to be compliant with treatment. Proper nutrition can not only help with recovery but also prevent future injuries. You have plenty of one on one time spent with your therapist and they will be able to help give you nutritional guidelines or tips to keep your nutrition strong.
