Most people associate physical therapy with athletes who have experienced injuries, or those who have been in accidents. However, there are a number of vexing conditions that physical therapy can eliminate. In keeping with this month’s theme of dispelling myths, we’ve listed some common ones below:

There are a wide variety of things that can cause a headache, from neck tension, poor posture, stress, muscle tightness and so on. For some people, headaches are a constant presence in their life, keeping them from living their lives to the fullest. One of the things a physical therapist can do is identify what kind of a headache you have and recommend the best treatment. Our manual therapy techniques are perfect for relieving stress and tension, and we can show you how to change your posture to avoid future headaches!

This condition can occur when the lymphatic system becomes blocked, causing swelling in the arms or legs. It’s common in those with certain types of cancers. The manual therapy techniques we perform can aid in lymphatic drainage, and we can wrap the limb to decrease the swelling.

Women’s health issues.

Issues such as vulvodynia, infertility problems, mastectomy pain and more can be helped by physical therapy. While we address the pain of both men and women, at Core we’ve developed a program to treat the conditions that specifically impact women.

Urinary Incontinence.

A number of things can cause urinary incontinence, including weak muscles, deconditioning, pregnancy, childbirth or surgery. We can show you how to strengthen the proper muscles, as well as teach you how to relax or contract the pelvic floor muscles to decrease the symptoms.

Also known as the spins, this is the sensation that the room is moving, even if you are sitting perfectly still. This commonly happens due to an inner ear problem, and moving your head a certain way can trigger it. A physical therapist can do a series of maneuvers and exercises with you that can eliminate it within a 10 to 15 minute session.

If you are struggling with any of these conditions, don’t hesitate to reach out to Core PT! In the state of Iowa, most insurance companies don’t require that you have your doctor’s permission before you see a PT, so you are free to make an appointment directly with us.
